WEATHER
Watamu is situated four degrees South of the Equator so has an equatorial climate. It is warm and humid throughout the year. The difference in the Seasons is really down to the winds. The temperature ranges between 28 and 34 degrees Centigrade from around October to March, when the Northerly ‘Kaskazi’ wind blows, and between 24 and 29 degrees Centigrade from around April and September, affected by the much stronger Southerly ‘Kazi’ wind. It is generally these winds that dictate the ‘Seasons’ and although they vary each year. As a general guide as to what to expect of the months in Watamu
December to January – Generally the hottest months and not as humid as most. The sea is calm and the beach is generally clear of seaweed.
February – Very similar to January if a bit hotter and more humid.
March – The winds tend to change sometime during March, fluctuating between the Kaskazi and the Kuzi – giving days when there appears to be no wind at all and humidity continues to build threatening rain that rarely comes.
April – A continuation of the humidity and heat of March with the likelihood that the Kuzi will settle in for the Off-Season beginning the start of the Rains. When the Rains come the temperature drops but the humidity remains. The seas start to get rougher and the sea weed begins to build up on parts of the beach.
May & June – Generally known as the month when you can guarantee the rain, although in past years it has not stuck to the plan. When the Rains come they can continue for days at a time in heavy, torrential downpours. Most days will still be sunny in parts .
July to September – The excessive heavy rainfall tends to tail off in these months, with occasional showers. The Kuzi remains strong and the seas are still rough – there is a large build up of weed on the beach and the temperature is around 24 degrees Centigrade and generally sunny. A very popular getaway period for Up Country folk wishing to warm themselves after the cold damp of the past few months.
October to November – The winds begin to die down in October and the weed disperses from the main Turtle Bay beach. This is probably the best time of year for those who do not like the full heat of the December to March period. There are the occasional rain showers but usually restricted to the early mornings . Watamu is usually quite green and lush looking during this period.
